The following data summary is based on 95% of respondents providing

all the information requested in the survey.  As in previous years'

surveys, a school was classified as a research school if it had either

a Ph.D. program and/or had teaching loads of 4 or fewer courses per

year. Unlike previous years' surveys, schools not classified as a

research school are referred to as 'balanced', as most demonstrate a

balanced emphasis on both teaching and research. Due to differences in

salary structure, positions accepted outside the United States were

not included in the calculation of salary averages.

For all categories of schools most respondents indicated position

acceptance dates of early November to mid December.  The position

acceptance dates ranged from late August 2002 to March 2002.
